Vangelija Despodova is a North Macedonian philologist born in 1941 in the village of Galishta, Greece. She was brought to safety by communist rebels as part of the so-called 'children refugees' and lived in Czechoslovakia from 1948 to 1958, where she completed primary and classical education. Despodova graduated in Slavic studies from the Faculty of Philology in Skopje in 1963, later earning a master's degree in 1973 and a doctorate in 1981. She worked at the Institute for Macedonian Language from 1964 to 1986 and was a director at the Institute for Old Slavic Culture from 1992 to 2001.
