Educated at the Royal College Colombo and the Architectural Association in London, he co-founded Edward, Reid and Begg with Geoffrey Bawa. Gunasekara pioneered modernist architectural language, integrating innovative technologies and materials to develop designs that catered to the tropical climate. His work often contrasted with Bawa's and aimed to express contemporary aspirations for modernity among the emerging middle class. He also transformed church architecture to better serve contemporary congregational needs.
