Valentina Tereshkova, born on March 6, 1937, is a Russian politician, engineer, and former astronaut. She is renowned for being the first and youngest woman to fly in space, completing a solo mission on June 16, 1963, aboard Vostok 6. During her flight, she orbited the Earth 48 times and spent nearly three days in space, making her the only woman to have undertaken a solo space mission. Before joining the Soviet space program, she worked as a textile factory worker and became a parachutist. She later qualified as a flight instructor and retired as a major-general from the air force.
