Vaikalathur Shankar Sunder, born on April 6, 1952, is a prominent Indian mathematician recognized for his work in subfactors, operator algebras, and functional analysis. He received the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1996 for his contributions to mathematical sciences. As one of India's pioneering operator algebraists, he has authored around sixty research papers and six books, including three graduate-level monographs on von Neumann algebras, with one co-authored with Fields Medalist Vaughan Jones. He obtained his PhD from Indiana University Bloomington in 1977.
