She competed in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, finishing sixth in the preliminary heats of the 100 m freestyle and fourth in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay. Furuta achieved significant success in domestic competitions, winning gold medals in the 100 m freestyle in both 1935 and 1936, and also in the 200 m freestyle in 1937 at the Japanese Championships.
