Dr. Tsewang Yishey Pemba was a pioneering Tibetan medical doctor who made significant contributions to western medicine. Born on June 5, 1932, he became the first Tibetan to earn an MBBS degree and to achieve fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons. He established the first hospital in Bhutan and authored significant literary works, including 'Young Days in Tibet', the first English book by a Tibetan, and 'Idols on the Path', the first fiction by a Tibetan in English. He passed away on November 26, 2011.
