Tõnu Karma was an Estonian linguist and bibliographer who lived in Latvia, notable for his contributions to the study and teaching of the Estonian and Livonian languages. Born on May 1, 1924, in Tartu, he studied Finno-Ugric languages at Tartu State University but was expelled politically before graduating. After moving to Riga in 1956, he worked at the University of Latvia Library and taught Estonian and Livonian. He authored over 200 articles on language and cultural relations between Estonia and Latvia, and edited works on Livonian folk songs and grammar.
