Tomokata Iwakura was a Japanese Western-style painter born on January 17, 1908. He was the third son of Prince Iwakura Tomoharu and had a notable lineage, being the grandson of Saigo Tsugumichi. Iwakura's artistic contributions emerged during a period of cultural transition in Japan, where Western art began to influence traditional forms. Despite his brief life, ending on October 14, 1937, his works captured the essence of Japanese identity amidst changing artistic landscapes.
