Tomoharu Shirota was a Japanese scholar of Chinese literature and a former professor at the University of Tokyo, specializing in regional culture and modern Chinese literature. Born in Tokyo in 1951, he graduated from the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Letters in 1976 and completed his master's degree in 1978. He taught at Ibaraki University and Tokyo Woman's University before becoming an associate professor in the University of Tokyo's College of Arts and Sciences in 1993, and a full professor in 1998. He passed away on October 28, 2017.
