Notably, at age 59, he set a world record for his age by finishing the Frankfurt Marathon in 2:27:52 in October 2019. His son, Eoin Hughes, ran the same race in 2:31:30, making their combined time the fastest recorded for a father-son duo in marathon history. In October 2020, Hughes set another record by completing a marathon at age 60 in 2:30:02, breaking the previous age group record by over six minutes.
