Thomas 'Tom' van der Geld is an American modern jazz mallet player born on September 9, 1947, in Boston. He initially played piano and trumpet before discovering the vibraphone. After studying at the University of New Mexico and Berklee College of Music, he co-founded the band Children at Play in 1971, which released several albums and gained acclaim. He has collaborated with various artists and performed with ensembles throughout Europe, ultimately becoming a professor of jazz subjects, including jazz vibraphone, at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim.
