Playing primarily as a right half or inside right, he began his career at Rangers in 1964 before moving to Motherwell, where he was pivotal in winning the Scottish Division Two title. After a decline in his role, he joined East Stirlingshire for several years. Donnelly also worked as a school teacher in Glasgow and has a son, Simon Donnelly, who played for clubs like Celtic and the Scotland national team.
