Toini Hortensia Markkanen (1915–2004) was a self-taught Finnish painter known for her unique silk painting technique. Born in Varkaus, she initially pursued a singing career but had to stop after losing her voice. Markkanen embarked on her artistic journey in 1954 after studying ceramics and porcelain painting. She became a full-time artist post-retirement, establishing Korpigalleria as a living and exhibition space. Her first solo exhibition was in 1964, and she published an autobiography in 2002. A centenary exhibition was held in 2015 at the Varkaus Art Museum.
