He held the title of a distinguished honorary ninth dan and was notable for his influence as the president of the Japan Shogi Association. Watanabe was a protégé of the 13th Meijin, Kinjiro Sekine. He made significant contributions to the evolution of the game and has left a lasting legacy in the world of shogi. He passed away on May 27, 1985.
