He is primarily known for his work as a scriptwriter and film director. In 1996, he authored the book 'Bringing Tony Home,' which received the prestigious Gratiaen Prize. Abeysekara also served as the chief coordinator of FOSWAL in Sri Lanka and was honored with the SAARC Literary Award for his contributions to literature and cinema.
