Thomas Shingles (1903-1984) was the Master Engraver of the Royal Canadian Mint from 1943 to 1965, starting work there in 1939. He designed key Canadian coinage, including the V-variant nickel during WWII and the 1959 50 cent piece. His work featured his initials and included various commemorative coins. After retiring, he continued as a freelance artist and won a contest for the design of the 1971 Canadian dollar coin.
