Thomas Peternell is a German mathematician born on December 11, 1954, in Witzenhausen, known for his work in complex analysis, particularly function theory of several complex variables. He is a professor at the University of Bayreuth and completed his doctorate in 1981 under Hans Grauert at the University of Göttingen. Peternell has served as the chair of the advisory board at the Emmy Noether Institute and as treasurer of the Oberwolfach Foundation. He is a co-editor of Documenta Mathematica and Manuscripta Mathematica, and his doctoral student is Stefan Müller-Stach.
