Thomas Hopper Alderson was a British Air Raid Precautions warden known for his extraordinary bravery during World War II, for which he became the first recipient of the George Cross in 1940. Born in Sunderland and educated in West Hartlepool, he started a career as a Merchant Navy engineer before serving as an Air Raid Warden in Bridlington. He was recognized for rescuing civilians from bombed buildings. Alderson continued his public service post-war in the Civil Defence Corps before he passed away from cancer in Driffield in 1965.
