Thomas A. Steitz is an American scientist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009, jointly with Venkatraman Ramakrishnan and Ada Yonath, for their work on the structure and function of ribosomes. Born in 1940, he earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Lawrence College in Wisconsin and a Ph.D. in molecular biology and biochemistry from Harvard University. After his studies, he worked at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, before joining Yale University. He has received numerous awards for his research excellence.
