He studied law during World War II at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, where he took classes illegally due to his refusal to sign a loyalty declaration. He began his journalism career in 1948 at Het Vrije Volk, becoming editor-in-chief in 1961. In 1968, he became a professor of criminal law and criminal procedural law at Groningen, known for his series 'Ons Strafrecht' and critiques on the overburdening of the Dutch judiciary. He retired in 1987 but remained active in public discourse.
