Tasio Erkizia is a former Basque nationalist priest, teacher, and politician born on October 23, 1943, in Lesaka, Navarra. He taught at Karmelo-Solokoetxe in Bilbao from 1971, eventually becoming its director. A founding member of the Herri Batasuna coalition in 1978, he served as a city councilor and deputy in the Basque Parliament. He faced imprisonment for political activism, especially during the ETA-related conflict. In 2011, he was sentenced for participating in an act commemorating an ETA member, but the European Court of Human Rights later ruled in his favor regarding freedom of expression.
