He graduated from the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Law and held various significant positions including Secretary-General of the Supreme Court of Japan, President of the Osaka High Court, and Judge of the Supreme Court from June 17, 2010, to March 9, 2017. He is the brother of journalist Akihiro Ōtani and has a history in rugby at the university level. While sharing the surname with Naoto Ōtani, a fellow Supreme Court Justice, there is no familial connection.
