Takeharu Kunimoto was a renowned Japanese shamisen player and rōkyoku singer born on November 1, 1960. He was notable for blending traditional shamisen music with bluegrass, being the only major player to do so. His musical journey was inspired by an encounter with Bill Monroe at age 14. Kunimoto spent time in the bluegrass program at East Tennessee State University and also experimented with rock music influences. He passed away at the age of 55 on December 24, 2015, after battling an illness.
