Hakuyū Taizan Maezumi was a prominent Japanese Sōtō Zen Buddhist priest who significantly influenced the development of Zen in the United States. He was born on February 24, 1931, and became a monk at eleven. In 1956, Maezumi moved to the U.S., eventually founding the Zen Center of Los Angeles in 1967. He combined Sōtō and Rinzai Zen practices and established the White Plum Asanga for his dharma successors. Despite facing personal challenges, including alcoholism and scandals, Maezumi remained a pivotal figure in American Zen, with a legacy continued by many of his students.
