Sylvia Ruuska was an American swimmer born on July 4, 1942, in Berkeley. She competed in the 1956 Summer Olympics at just 14 years old, winning a silver medal in the 4×100 meter freestyle and a bronze in the 400 meter freestyle. Ruuska was the first woman to set an official world record in the 400 meter individual medley in 1958 and broke her record multiple times. She also won a silver medal in the 400 meter freestyle at the 1959 Pan American Games and was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1976.
