Syed Muhammad Ashraf, also known as S. M. Ashraf, is a distinguished Indian retired civil servant (IRS) and an accomplished Urdu novelist and short-story writer. He made history as the first person to pass the civil service examination in Urdu in India. His literary contributions include novels and numerous short story collections, with some works translated into English and other languages. Ashraf has been recognized with notable awards, including the Sahitya Academy Award in 2004 and the Aalmi Farogh-e-Urdu Adab Award in 2018.
