Sven Yngve Torbjörn Lagerwall is a Swedish physicist born in 1934, renowned for inventing ferroelectric liquid crystals. He completed his Master’s degree at Chalmers University of Technology in 1958 and continued his studies at the Hahn-Meitner Institute in Berlin. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Technical University of Berlin in 1964. Lagerwall has been associated with Chalmers since 1966, becoming a professor in 1986. His research on liquid crystals began in 1974, leading to the development of ferroelectric liquid crystals in collaboration with Noel A. Clark in 1979. He has also focused on antiferroelectric liquid crystals recently.
