Susan Solomon is an atmospheric chemist, born on January 19, 1956, in Chicago. She works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2011 as the Ellen Swallow Richards Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate Science. Solomon was pivotal in proposing the mechanism for ozone depletion in the Antarctic, linked to chlorine-free radical reactions. She is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the European Academy of Sciences, and the French Academy of Sciences. In 2008, Time magazine named her one of the world's 100 most influential people.
