She is known for her research on the structure and function of contractile proteins, contributing significantly to the field of molecular physiology and biophysics. Currently, she teaches at the University of Vermont, in the Department of Molecular Physiology & Biophysics. Lowey is also recognized for her contributions to science as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Biophysical Society.
