Cheifet's career includes various reporting positions for PBS and ABC. Raised in Philadelphia, he attended Central High School before graduating from the University of Southern California in 1960 with degrees in Mathematics and Psychology. He furthered his education at Harvard Law School and later taught journalism at the Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno.
