Steven Chu is an American physicist born on February 28, 1948. He is renowned for his research on cooling and trapping atoms using laser light, which earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1997 alongside Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and William Phillips. From 2009 to 2013, he served as the 12th United States Secretary of Energy. Prior to his appointment, he was a professor at UC Berkeley and director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, focusing on single-molecule biological systems. Chu is a strong advocate for renewable energy research and the transition away from fossil fuels to combat climate change.
