Stevan Mirković was a participant in the Yugoslav Partisan struggle and a soldier in the Yugoslav People's Army. He joined the partisans and the Communist Party in 1944, fighting at the Srem Front where he was wounded. During the 1980s, he held various high-ranking positions in the Yugoslav Army, including Chief of the General Staff from 1987 to 1989. He retired at the end of 1989 but remained involved with the organization of the Yugoslav People's Army while becoming increasingly critical of Serbian leader Slobodan Milošević.
