George Smedes York is an American politician and real estate developer born on February 22, 1941. He was the mayor of Raleigh, North Carolina, from 1979 to 1983 and served on the Raleigh City Council from 1977 to 1979. A graduate of North Carolina State University with a degree in civil engineering, he later earned an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. York worked with his family’s construction company and was chairman of the Urban Land Institute from 1989 to 1991.
