Sjoukje Stelwagen-Bouma was the first female Dutch short track speed skating champion, winning her title in 1933 with a record time of 15.1 seconds for 140 meters. Born on March 13, 1911, in Grouw, she used her prize money from skating to finance her dowry. Her husband was shipbuilder Libbe Stelwagen, while their daughter Hetty was born near their shipyard. In 1982, she participated as an honorary guest in a celebratory event for the Dutch Skating Union. Sjoukje passed away at age 97 on July 15, 2008, in her hometown of Grouw.
