Educated at various schools, including Pont-lliw and Pontardawe, he later attended Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Ystalyfera and Coleg Annibynnol Bala-Bangor. Alun was an early member of the Welsh Language Society, a fervent campaigner for Welsh education, and chaired Parents for Welsh Education in Swansea. He served as a minister in Bethel, Sgeti, and Trinity, Swansea, and had two sons, Steffan and Gwydion.
