He became an auxiliary bishop and titular bishop of Tamascan on December 12, 1969, and was consecrated bishop on February 1, 1970, with Ernesto Gallina as the principal consecrator. Tonyé was appointed the bishop of Douala on August 29, 1973, and continued in this role when Douala became an archdiocese on March 18, 1982, leading until his resignation on August 31, 1991.
