She served as the rector of the Universidad Autónoma del Caribe in Barranquilla from 2003 until 2012, when she took a paid leave due to legal issues. In April 2013, she was suspended by the board while incarcerated. Notably, she was arrested in Bogota in 2013 for her alleged involvement in orchestrating the murder of Fernando Cepeda and for attempting to bribe a witness in the case.
