Sir Sidney Poitier, KBE (February 20, 1927 - January 6, 2022) was a Bahamian-American actor, director, author, and diplomat. He made history in 1964 as the first Black person to win an Oscar for Best Actor for his role in 'Lilies of the Field.' In 1967, he starred in three hit films: 'To Sir, with Love,' 'In the Heat of the Night,' and 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner,' solidifying his status as a top box office star. He was also a respected director and served as the Bahamas' ambassador to Japan from 1997 to 2007.
