Shūhei Hiwatari was a Japanese haiku poet born on March 29, 1912, in Hirakata, Osaka Prefecture. His real name was Akira Tsuji. He began composing haiku around 1931 and was associated with various haiku journals, including 'Flagship,' 'Mars,' and 'Cold Thunder.' Hiwatari's work transitioned from seasonal haiku to avant-garde movements in post-war Osaka, exemplified by lines like 'A woman abandoned in Celebes on a tatami mat.' He passed away on January 8, 1994.
