Shōzō Ōsawa (October 2, 1928 - May 27, 2022) was a Japanese biologist specializing in molecular genetics. He earned a doctorate in science from Nagoya University and served as an emeritus professor at both Nagoya University and Hiroshima University. Ōsawa is renowned for discovering that a type of bacteria, mycoplasma, uses an unusual genetic code in 1984 and for proposing the codon capture theory to explain this phenomenon. He passed away on May 27, 2022, due to illness, with his death reported on June 1, 2022.
