Shoko Asahara, born Chizuo Matsumoto on March 2, 1955, in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto, was the founder of the Aum Shinrikyo religious cult. He was a prominent figure known for orchestrating the 1995 sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway and was implicated in numerous other crimes. Asahara died on July 6, 2018, and was a controversial figure whose actions led to widespread destruction and loss of life in Japan.
