Shōji Tatsukawa was a Japanese historian and scholar of the history of disease, born on February 24, 1927, in Tokyo. He graduated from Waseda University and became a professor at Kitasato University in 1966, later receiving the Suntory Academic Prize in 1980 for his work 'The Landscape of Death.' His research initially focused on mining history, but he shifted to cultural studies of illness and death in the 1970s, publishing numerous works on the subject until his retirement in 1997, after which he was named professor emeritus.
