His grandfather was architect Kōzō Kawai, and his father was poet and professor Mokutarō Kinoshita (real name: Masao Ōta). His uncle was Enzo Ōta, who was the head of the Civil Engineering Department at the Imperial Capital Reconstruction Bureau.
