Sherman W. White Jr. was a U.S. Army Air Force officer and a combat fighter pilot who served in the 99th Fighter Squadron, part of the all-African American 332nd Fighter Group, famously known as the Tuskegee Airmen. He holds the distinction of being one of the first African American U.S. military combat fighter pilots and was the first to be killed in aerial combat. Born on October 17, 1919, he made significant contributions to military aviation history before his death on July 2, 1943.
