Sheck Exley was an influential American cave diver, credited as a pioneer in the field. He authored two key books on cave diving safety and procedures. Appointed the first chairman of the Cave Diving Section of the American National Speleological Society, he established essential safety standards still used today. Exley also helped standardize the 'octopus' regulator for underwater safety. Tragically, he passed away at 45 while attempting to set a diving depth record in Mexico's Zacatón sinkhole, which is 1,080 feet deep.
