He resigned after a hostage crisis in Budyonnovsk. Stepashin held various ministerial roles, including Minister of Justice from 1997 to 1998 and Minister of Internal Affairs from 1998 to 1999. He was briefly Prime Minister before being succeeded by Vladimir Putin. He later joined the political party Yabloko and was elected to the State Duma, subsequently becoming the head of the Audit Chamber of the Russian Federation.
