Sergei Borisovich Ivanov is a Russian politician born on January 31, 1953, in Leningrad. He served as the First Deputy Prime Minister from November 14, 2005, to May 12, 2008, and as Minister of Defense from March 2001 to February 2007. Prior to his government roles, he worked in Soviet and Russian foreign intelligence specializing in law and foreign languages. Ivanov was appointed Secretary of the Security Council by Boris Yeltsin and later served Vladimir Putin. He is notable for being the first civilian to hold the position of Defense Minister in Russia.
