Seppo Mäkelä, born on September 10, 1948, in Porvoo, is a prominent Finnish ice hockey referee. He officiated 753 top-level matches in Finland, ranking third all-time among referees. Active from 1974 to 1999, he initially served as a linesman before becoming a referee in the SM-liiga. Mäkelä was named Referee of the Year ten times and was voted the best by players eleven times. He also officiated at international tournaments, including the Olympics and World Championships. The best referee award in Mestis is named in his honor.
