He graduated from police training in 1982 and earned multiple degrees including a master's in education and political science, and a licentiate in law. Kolehmainen began his police career as a junior constable in Helsinki and held various roles including a motorcycle police and a leader within police organizations. He announced his resignation in March 2024, set to retire in September.
