Sean Barry MacFarland is a three-star general in the United States Army, born on February 12, 1959, in New York City. In 2015, he was appointed as the commander of the Third Corps and led the coalition against ISIS in Syria and Iraq. He oversaw Operation Inherent Resolve and transferred command to General Stephen J. Townsend in August 2016. MacFarland has held various positions, including Deputy Commanding General and Chief of Staff for the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. He also commanded combat brigades during key operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
